UK's Future Network teams up with AOL August 31, 1999 03:22 AM LONDON, Aug 31 (Reuters) - Computer magazine publisher The Future Network Plc said on Tuesday it had entered into a partnership with Netscape Online, the new subscription-free Internet service from AOL Europe. AOL, a joint venture between America Online Inc AOL and Bertelsmann , launched its free service last week to rival Freeserve , which achieved UK market leadership last year after launching no-fee Internet access. Future Network's new media division FutureNet will distribute Netscape Online's Internet access software on CD with its magazines and also provide advertising space for AOL. FutureNet will also supply content to Netscape Online, including games, technology, entertainment and sports news, drawing on material from FutureNet's specialist websites and magazines, which include Official Playstation Magazine, Total Guitar and Total Football. Future will share telephony, advertising, sponsorship and e-commerce revenues generated from all customers using Netscape Online's software obtained via Future's magazines. Future, which floated on the London Stock Exchange in June, will also get "anchor tenancy" on Netscape Online's home page, which will include links to Future's own websites. The firm currently has more than 18 magazine websites, plus three more due for launch in the next four weeks. It has an e-mail games newsletter and four web networks focused on games, music and football. Future also publishes more than 60 specialist consumer magazines in the UK, selling 2.1 million copies each month. Greg Ingham, Future's chief executive, said the partnership was a great boost for Future's online business, providing a new channel for reaching customers. AOL UK Managing Director Karen Thomson said the deal with Future would enable AOL to reach more than 2.1 million potential new subscribers every month through some of the UK's most popular magazines. "We believe that our growing network of alliances with some of the UK's leading families of brands...will ensure that Netscape Online will quickly become a leading subscription-free Internet service provider in the UK."
