The major roadblock for MPLS at this point is the lack of inherent Traffic Engineering. My last exposure to it led me to believe that it was up for vote with out any traffic engineering capabilities i.e. its a layer 2 1/2 protocol. This sort of looks like Frame Relay using labels instead of DLCI and out of band control. The traffic engineering is on the the to do list. Without it I don't think MPLS offers a whole lot. MPLS however, works effectively with differentiated services. With MPLS and a proven set of Per Hop Behaviors for diffserv and you have something close to ATM behavior.
