Hi surelock.. that was an interesting set of observations.

The source you cited doesn't mention anything about how Juniper has addressed the issues surrounding scale with respect to their routing and forwarding architecture. But that is understandable, since he is a part of a $1Billion+ company, and seems contented with GbE flows for the time being.

In their assessment, however, they fail to envisage themselves in the position of a very large SP or backbone provider whose requirements may be many thousands- or a millionfold- larger than their own, in the now and not too distant future.

JNPR, as is the case with a few others in their class, are now beginning to do so, as they have confronted the growing number of Internet routes that must be maintained in their fabric like few others have. Those routes are now numbering close to 70,000 and growing rapidly, up very dramatically from just a few years ago when the now-dominant routers including the CSCO 7500s and 12000s were designed. At the same time, they have undertaken to separate [partition] routing from forwarding at the processor level, allowing for a more optimal and manageable means of scaling each consideration. At least, that is how I read the situation.

IMO, this is the low hanging fruit area that they see as needing first attention, and the other products will follow, if they are given a chance to thrive on their own without first being bought out. Just a few observations after delving more deeply into the philosophies behind their founding and current makeup.
