What puzzles me is what use these chips are to anyone as main memory.

As far as I know there is no chipset to use them with. Intel certainly isn't going to release one soon. With no chipset there are no motherboards. Sure you can put them on a graphics system, by making your own ASIC, but that's a (small) niche relative to PC main memory volume of around 1-2 billion chips a year.
