Ten and Charles - <There's a threat, all right, but that's a job for Cascades and Foster, along with chipsets like 450NX, Profusion, and Carmel. The real challenge to Merced and 460GX will be from the RISC guys, especially Alpha and Ultrasparc.>

Agree 100% here. Merced is not aimed at Athlon. I'm pretty sure AMD was hardly a consideration on whether to demo or not. I know that's not the message we're getting internally, that is, no one's saying, "We gotta get out Merced, because the Athlon is coming".

Merced/460GX is the near future, and another market that AMD does not participate in yet. Cascades/Foster, Profusion/Carmel are the direct responses to the Athlon.

The Intel world does not totally revolve around AMD. There are others to worry about in addition to them.
