The latest wire story re Star:

Possibly in response, the San Jose Mercury News reported that Microsoft is considering renting its software applications for use over the Internet...

The San Jose Mercury News reported that Microsoft (MSFT) is seriously evaluating whether to make applications available to remote users, who would use the Internet to access the programs stored on central servers and pay a fee for each use, the Mercury News said...

For Microsoft, the spread to applications could be significant because it derives roughly 40% of its revenue from sales of Office
.

Now, which would you rather do?

a) Pay $100-$300 for a CD full of application bits that are outdated the day you buy them and then stay alert for patches.

b) "Rent" your software, use it over the internet as needed and "pay for each use", also optionally paying to store your documents on an ISP's server if you are a home or small business user.

c) Get your software for free, loading modules over the web as needed, optionally paying to store your documents on an ISP's server if you are a home or small business user.

I know which one I'd prefer. It looks from this article like Sun is leaving A & B to M$ and claiming C for itself. It will of course have plenty of company plenty quick, but the first mover always has an advantage.

Think M$ may not be sweating this one?

(Note: Up big on BIG volume? What the heck does that mean?<g>)
