The problem is that few people, even with training, are crack shots, especially when rattled, and therefore it makes sense to give them every advantage in a self- defense situation.....

A pump is fine if you are good with it. Wife doesn't have it in the forearms, so an autoloading 20 gauge would be my choice for her. Goose loads alternated with slugs.
