Stephen : In which event it's no train smash --- what is sold yesterday is either bought on the market or mined tomorrow and given back to the bank. All that happens, because of these transactions, is the time of the actual sale is shifted forwards.

My concern is what happens if the gold is not "repaid" as gold. If the bank is a keen seller/disposer of gold or part of a gold conspiracy, as alleged, then it will be happy to receive equivalent value or cash in return for that gold. Nothing illegal about that. But boy-o-boy will the goldbugs be upset.
