The movement from a civilization that strives and achieves to a civilization that sits back and sucks up the spoils of the successes of others has been a constant throughout human history.

This is what happened to the Greeks and made them unable to withstand the Romans, then it happened to the Romans and made them unable to withstand the Europeans.

FWIW, oppressive and opportunistic government is more of a symptom of this transition than it is a cause, although clearly they don't help the situation any.

Also, FWIW, the politicians who don't immediately sell out are often among the first to be destroyed when the barbarians come through the gate, so that's at least something.

So, who here knows Mandarin? You might need it.
