A knowledgeable post, RTev...still, I have some disagreements. I, for instance, get annoyed at the fact that if I get a single magazine subscription, I am put on a mailing list and get all kinds of junk mail, offers, and cold calls thereafter. Collecting this data can be valuable (did you see the piece a while back on WEB MD and the fact that pharmaceutical companies were paying them for their info on users and where they went, since the pharms need to get people w/ various illnesses for drug trials; the users of WEB MD had no idea, when they were presented a choice for a chat or thread and clicked on it, that the info was being used potentially in such a way), lucrative, and used without our permission. I like to have a choice. Usually I am informed that I need to enable cookies (as on my MSN or YAHOO portfolios) and SI did not do so, so it took me a while to figure out why the new SI was not working for me. And though I'm not particularly paranoid, I wouldn't know what corporations or the government would find useful or interesting. And then there is the issue of hackers.

I just like a choice. Like to know how my wanderings around the net are being compiled. But as the world turns into one big broadband, it's inevitable...
