Monday August 30, 8:12 am Eastern Time Company Press Release ISI Offers Industry's First Freely-Distributed Internet Appliance Reference Design for Java-Enabled Mobile Consumer Devices ISI Partners With Mitsubishi Electric, Sun Microsystems and Espial Group to Deliver Wireless PDA Development Platform SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug 30, 1999-- Integrated Systems, Inc. (ISI) (Nasdaq:INTS - news), a leading worldwide provider of embedded systems software for a broad range of industries, today announced the introduction of a new freely-distributed reference design package for wireless PDAs. Developed in conjunction with Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, Sun Microsystems and Espial Group, the wireless PDA platform, called the WebPDA(TM), enables OEMs to quickly implement and bring to market wireless PDA- and other Internet-enabled Java-based intelligent devices optimized for and extendable to mobile applications such as cell phones, video and web phones, smart remote controllers, and hand-held industrial/inventory terminals.
Available in October, the new WebPDA platform, developed under ISI's Internet Appliance technology alliance program, VANTAGE IA, employs Sun's pJava, along with ISI's industry-proven pSOS+© RTOS, which is specifically optimized for Internet appliances. The reference design is based on Mitsubishi's virtual remote personal computer (VRPC) hardware design and embedded M32R/D microprocessor, and also incorporates Espial Devicetop(TM), the consumer-oriented Java applications and services environment, Espial Assistant personal information manager (PIM) and Espial Ebox email client technologies.
``The WebPDA reference design from ISI extends our commitment to the embedded markets for Internet-based, consumer information appliances. ISI's pSOS+ operating system allows us to demonstrate an optimal pJava platform on the M32R/D microprocessor,' said Hideharu ``Hal' Takebe, director of microcontroller business management at Mitsubishi Electric's North American affiliate, Mitsubishi Electronics America, Inc.
``Working devices designed for real-world applications using Java are now accessible to the growing market for wireless Internet products. Our relationship with, and support of, ISI and Mitsubishi Electric has produced very tangible results with direct benefits for our Java customers,' said Sun Microsystems' Mike Cleary, vice president for embedded and consumer products.
``We are pleased that ISI and Mitsubishi Electric chose our Java application development environment and consumer applications to play an integral role in their wireless PDA reference design. The ease of configuring our software to meet the needs of OEM developers is clearly a defining and winning characteristic of our products,' said Jaison Dolvane, president, Espial Group.
``With ISI's reference design, Internet appliance developers will now be able to enter target markets and exploit windows of opportunity at unprecedented speed. OEMs can quickly move to production, and then to market, with new generations of mobile, Internet-enabled consumer devices for a variety of dedicated functions, such as rental car return, package shipping, mail tracking and similar applications,' stated Chuck Boesenberg, president and CEO of ISI. ``ISI views its partners as visionaries in this market space. Together, we've dealt with the key issues. We've integrated optimized software and hardware components and created standard configurations for wireless PDA and other Internet appliances. The prospective customer is assured that the pieces and parts work together and can quickly be customized to meet product requirements.'
Powering Next-Generation Solutions
Designed specifically for Internet appliance applications, ISI's reference platforms significantly accelerate OEM time-to-market by slashing development and production cycle times and costs. Each ISI reference platform showcases Internet-enabling technology that can be quickly and easily configured to meet specific consumer device needs. By delivering fully customizable hardware/software packages targeted for Internet-enabled devices, ISI simplifies and shortens the customization, production, and marketing processes for OEMs.
ISI's flagship product, pSOSystem(TM), is the ideal RTOS solution for the Internet appliance market due to the small footprint and deterministic behavior of the pSOS+© kernel. pSOSystem provides a foundation for embedded applications using Sun Microsystems' widely accepted Java(TM) programming language, which supports networked applications and enables developers to write applications once that will run on any Java-enabled machine. In partnership with Sun, ISI provides design, development, and sales channel support for a variety of Sun's Java technologies to develop innovative Java-based applications. Sun subcontracts ISI's engineering design service center, Doctor Design, Inc., for the development of Java technology-based embedded products. The partnership is expected to generate up to 100 new design wins, resulting in 10 million Java technology-based embedded devices within the next few years.
