I remember every one. We had a washer with a wringer, and hung the clothes on a line. My grandmother, the one who lived out in the country, had a party line.

19 of 25. Older than dirt.

I could never stay upright on roller skates so never
found out what a 'skate key' is. Or maybe a skate key
would've helped somehow?

A few more items that could be added to the list . . .

- Zone numbers on mailing addresses

- Churn

- Grapette (it has disappeared, hasn't it?)

- Tonette

- Powerglide transmission

- Two Civil Defense markers on the AM radio dial

- Button on the back of a buttondown shirt collar

Hell, I remembered at least 20 of 25 and I sure ain't older than dirt. We still had party lines in my hometown when I was in high school in the mid-'70s.

Black Jack gum. There's a good one. When I was very very young, until I was 4, we lived in a small house next door to a funeral home. The mortician used to carry Black Jack gum and always offered some when he saw me playing in the yard.

The annual put things in perspective list for college freshmen came out the other day and the last item on the list was something to the effect that JFK's assassination in the minds of these youngsters is as remote as Lincoln's or Garfield's. Ouch.

I did NOT need this.
(Older than dirt - mutter, mutter- what's wrong with wise and mature, experienced and well-rounded?)
How about prom dresses with a zillion net petticoats?
10 cent comics?
Wearing gloves and a hat to church?
AN organplayer in the movie theatre?

I'm 11 - 15.

And unfortunately constantly reminded of it. Down the block from my house is one of those classic grocery stores with the aisles maybe spaced about three claustrophobic feet apart and a quarter inch layer of dust on every can on the shelf. It's called the Eezy Freezy. And up on the sign over the store (one of those white ones where you put in the black block letters like they still have on some movie marquees) it says, "We Give S&H Green Stamps!!" (the word "green" is, of course, written in green letters). My neighborhood is kind of very self consciously retro, and apparently some years ago they took down the S&H thing off the sign and everyone complained, so they put it back.

My mother did the S&H thing religiously. And another kind (red instead of green) that for the life of me I can't recall.
