<My own view is that the simple technical analysis that people often expound on on these boards are easily coded and checked by a computer and they don't work. Professionals have gone much further with advanced mathematical techniques such as neural nets and linear predictive filter and who knows what else and their edge barely covers the cost of equipment and the salaries of the quants that they employ.>

The heavy math stuff does work....sometimes, but so does the KISS stuff. I know...I've been building a robust TA system for buys and sells on almost any data set for a few years and the KISS I like better. If you really think "they don't work"...go over to the P&F thread. You don't need a computer to chart that stuff, you can do it by hand, it's very simple ...and it works. Some Professional money managers even use it to manage BILLIONS of $$$$, fact. Nothing is fool proof and their is no HOLY GRAIL, but good TA helps to let winners run and cuts losses small = Success.

Helios, you are right on the mark. If I really believe what I write, then I would JUST invest in an index fund - right you are indeed!!! But (and this is a huge BUT), my ego will not allow me to surrender to the notion that I (me, the magnificent) do not possess knowledge above and beyond the market's possession.

I also LOVE this company. Don't ask me why. I just do. Maybe it's the way its the name rolls off my tongue so easily. Who knows.....

I also enjoy this thread immensely. I think there are good people on this thread. Intelligent people.

So, here I sit with an inefficient portfolio of CUBE and Templeton Developing Markets Trust and Vanguard S&P 500 Fund and a few other stocks not worth mentioning and my performance is a notch below mediocre.

I also like FredE. I enjoy his wisdom.
