INTERESTING DEVELOPMENT. Intel Forms $200 Million Fund to Invest in Networking and Communications Companies PALM SPRINGS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 1, 1999-- Investments to Encourage Solutions Based on Intel's Internet Exchange Architecture and Other Key Intel Voice and Data Communications Programs Intel today announced that it has formed a $200 million equity fund to invest in companies supporting Intel's key programs and initiatives in voice and data communications. The first focus of the fund, called the Intel Communications Fund, will be investments in companies developing solutions based on Intel's new Internet Exchange (IX) Architecture. IX Architecture provides an open, standards-based design that enables systems designers to add new network functionality quickly and cost-effectively. Level One Communications, Inc., an Intel company, also introduced the IXP1200 network processor today along with a family of other silicon-based components, designed to help enable IX Architecture-based system designs. "Using IX Architecture and other programs, our goal is to bring high-volume economies and efficiencies to our networking and communications customers," said Les Vadasz, senior vice president and director, Corporate Business Development. "With the formation of the Intel Communications Fund, we are focusing Intel's venture investing expertise to help accelerate development of these solutions." At the end of June, Intel's total portfolio of strategic investments was valued at approximately $3.5 billion and contained approximately 275 companies worldwide. The Intel Communications Fund, which will make minority equity investments of typically less than $10 million, will be managed and funded by Intel. For IX Architecture-related investments, the fund will target companies developing basic communications components, real-time operating systems, software tools, protocol stacks and other communications building blocks. Companies receiving investments from the fund will also be eligible to receive certain benefits such as early access to future IX Architecture specifications, compatibility testing and participation in developers' forums. Investment proposals for the Intel Communications Fund should be sent to proposals@intel.com. In addition to IX Architecture-related investments, the fund is expected to invest in companies supporting other Intel voice and data communications programs and initiatives, including ones being developed within Intel's Communications Products Group, to be detailed at a later date. Intel, the world's largest chip maker, is also a leading manufacturer of computer, networking and communications products. Additional information about Intel is available at www.intel.com/pressroom.
