>>What if I have Star office only , can I open up a file in the word or Excel format?<<

Last time I played with StarOffice (version 5.0), it could both read and write Word and Excel 97 formats, which I believe is the same format used in Office2000. Some stuff would not translate (like Visual Basic macros), because it does not have a direct analogous feature in StarOffice. But usually these untranslatable features were rare in real-world documents.

Also, retraining costs are negligible because there is so little difference in the user interface. One of the reasons I don't like StarOffice is because it is too much like MSOffice, whch I consider to be slow and bloated. (JMHO)

Microsoft Buys Digital-Imaging Technology From Photo Access

Microsoft Buys Digital-Imaging Technology From Photo Access
Redmond, Washington, Aug. 31 (Bloomberg) -- Microsoft Corp. said it acquired technology from closely held Photo Access Corp., a developer of Internet-related digital-camera software, to improve the quality of electronic images in its products.

The world's biggest software maker said the Photo Access technology would be used in developing its Windows CE operating system for future digital-imaging devices. Windows CE is a ``light' version of its flagship operating system designed for Internet devices ranging from handheld computers to digital phones. Terms weren't disclosed.

Digital imaging is central to Microsoft's push beyond desktop computers and into Internet computing on a range of devices from pagers to television set-top boxes. Photo Access has developed technology, for example, that lets users order photo prints over the Internet directly from their camera. ``The Photo Access software is an important component for Microsoft,' said Dave Wright, director of the company's business development in the productivity-appliances division.

Photo Access ``has developed expertise which aims to provide device manufacturers with a cost-effective, high-performance platform for digital imaging development,' he said.
