ML has downgraded ATI today.....The Nvidia threat is real, and there is a disturbing trend developing. As I understand it, Nvidia makes high end graphics, leaving ATI strong at the bottom end. However, with prices dropping, the distinction between high and low end is blurry. It seems Nvidia had a suit against them from SGI, following a number of SGI engineers joining Nvidia and developing a low end product that was on the mind of SGI (SGI is really at the high end, and ATI at the low end, with Nvidia in the middle). The suit was dropped, and SGI is sending engineers to Nvidia to develop an SGI card that will run on your PC by Xmas. This is a real threat to ATI since there is no one better than SGI at graphics (IMO). Add to that Dell dropping ATI, and the market is right to be concerned. We may be seeing the top in ATI market share with a transition occurring to the competition. There are less vulnerable companies to invest in, and I am likely to get out sometime today, or following a partial retracement. It is pretty clear that ATI has been losing sentiment with investors, and in retrospect I think a lot of people have been looking for an excuse to get out of ATI. Witness the no-move on good news, but always a down move when any type of threat emerges.
