AMERITECH INTRODUCES INTERNET CALLER ID Annie Lindstrom Ameritech (Chicago) has introduced Internet Caller ID, a new service that lets customers use the Internet and answer their phone calls simultaneously. It is available to consumers in the Chicago metropolitan area and works with any Internet service provider (ISP). As with Caller ID, customers are notified of the incoming caller's name and number. With Ameritech Internet Caller ID, a "pop-up" message on the computer screen shows the caller's name and number. The customer then decides how to handle each call with just a point and click of the computer's mouse. Customers have four choices: • Answer the call, which automatically logs them off the Internet; • Forward the call to voice mail, another local phone line or a cellular phone; • Send a reply message that tells the caller to call back later or that they will get a call back; and • Ignore the call and call back when it's convenient. According to Ameritech, there are 600,000 Internet customers in the Chicago metropolitan area, and the need is growing for services similar to Internet Caller ID. Industry analysts predict that one of four online households will have Internet call waiting services by the end of 2000. An Internet Caller ID log keeps a record of all the calls received. Ameritech has a patent pending for the design of its services' pop-up message window. The service costs $6.95 per month, including the cost of Busy Line Transfer, which is needed to make the service work. The one-time activation fee of $5 will be waived for customers who order by Oct. 15. A referral program lets customers send an e-mail greeting card to family or friends to suggest that Internet Caller ID is a good solution when they are online. If they sign up and stay with Internet Caller ID for three months, the person who makes the referral automatically get one free month of service.
