Where I lived, New Orleans, the milk didn't freeze. And I wasn't cool enough to own my own skates.

I remember when we lived in the St. Thomas project, there was a girl named something like Gloria or Darla who wore a poodle skirt, with crinolines, that would crackle and rustle when she ran past us going to meet her boyfriend, who would be waiting for her in a convertible. Remember crinolines? And I was so envious, so was my sister Lydia. So my mother bought us each a poodle skirt, but we only had one crinoline each, and we didn't crackle and rustle. I think it took three to get the right effect.
