I've been thinking about the "fixed mount antennas" shown on

martel.is

As I understand it, you need a DC power supply on one end and any phone on the other. These antennas look like they could be made very cheaply (100-200$?). Batteries and phone handsets are cheap almost everywhere. I hope G* is not buying too many of the Schlumberger phone booths, which are supposedly running several K$ per unit. They're self contained, solar powered jobs, with lot's of bells and whistles, for unattended usage in bad climates, etc. A better alternative may be to just mass produce the antennas, let local entrepeneurs find the batteries and hand sets. To start with a bang in places like China and South America, G* SPs should give away the antenna, to anyone able/willing to commit to setting up village telephone booths using the antenna and locally available (car?) batteries and any (surplus?) handsets.
