I don't recall seeing mothers with babies in restaurants like the Rainbow Room or the Four Seasons. And I doubt that the dress code is compatible with the type of loose garments that are conducive to public breast-feeding. Just as one doesn't take a baby to the opera, nor, for that matter, young children. There are family restaurants, and there are ones that are not really suitable for families with young children. So that's a red herring.

Again, it seems to me that the solution to what you bring up as an extenuating circumstance (expensive restaurant, ambiance) is that of offering a very pleasant alternative- a small quiet private place for the mother- and on the part of the mother, a willingness to say, oh of course, and not make a silly PC statement about it.

THe problem ---as usual!- is that people immediately dig in to their belief and argue it as an either/or, we need laws!! rather than what is reasonable.
