GSM-data 38,4 kbps in Sonera network. Nokia's terminals, Communicator and WAP-phone, mentioned.

-I think both Ericy's and Noka's gsm-basestations are uppgraded.
-I see this part of WAP pilot marketing -projekt, which we use to call 'Finland'.

GSM HiSpeed Data can be brought to use immediately in phones supporting the data transfer rate 14.4 Kbps, such as Nokia 9110 Communicator and Nokia's WAP phone 7110, which will soon be available on the market. The new terminals deploying multislot technology will make it possible to use the whole capacity of GSM HiSpeed, which will result in significantly higher data transfer rates. The new terminals should become available on the market during this year.

SONERA LAUNCHES HIGH SPEED DATA TRANSFER IN GSM NETWORK
GSM HiSpeed Data increases the actual data transfer rate fourfold

Sonera is the first telecommunications operator in the world to start to provide a new high-speed data transfer service based on HSCSD (High Speed Circuit Switched Data) technology. The new service is called GSM HiSpeed Data, and it encompasses the entire coverage area of the GSM network.

HSCSD is a high-speed circuit switched data transfer technology for the GSM network. The service allows the simultaneous use of up to four channels (multislot), as a result of which the maximum data transfer rate, compared with the current rate, will be fourfold, i.e. 38.4 Kbps. The service will increase the data transfer rate of one traffic channel from the present 9.6 Kbps to 14.4 Kbps. Moreover, high data transfer rates allow the transmission of moving images over the GSM network. Sonera also offers V.42bis data compression in its network, which will further increase the transfer rate of particularly data in text format.

"An ordinary user will notice the difference in that data connections become faster. Thanks to GSM HiSpeed Data, wireless data transfer is beginning to approach the present fixed modem and ISDN connections. The new speeds also make it convenient to use wireless access to the Internet and e-mail. For companies, the high-speed wireless data transfer opens up new opportunities. It makes the use of data transfer easier and more efficient especially for remote users and employees who are continuously on the move", says Product Manager Niko Kettunen of Sonera Mobile Telephone Services.

GSM HiSpeed Data is provided as a supplementary service for all Sonera GSM subscriptions. In a data subscription, high-speed data transfer is a standard feature. The services operates even abroad provided that the local operator has concluded a data roaming agreement with Sonera and the local network provides high-speed data transmission service. The options available to the user are Outgoing Data Service and Incoming Data Service.

At present, the 14.4 Kbps feature can be utilized in most parts of the GSM coverage area, and the area is expanding constantly. This rate operates at the moment in the provinces of Oulu and Lapland and in most parts of the provinces of Uusimaa, Itä-Uusimaa, Varsinais-Suomi, Kanta-Häme, Päijät-Häme and Åland. The biggest towns included in the area are the Helsinki area, Turku, Salo, Lahti, Porvoo, Tampere, Oulu and Rovaniemi. The rate 9.6 Kbps and its multiples can be deployed everywhere within the GSM network coverage area.

The current GSM data transfer rate 9.6 Kbps has proved to be too slow in practice for instance for the browsing of web pages. Higher transfer rates will make it more convenient to use the present applications. "We are focusing strongly on the development of future data services, and we want to provide our customers with higher-speed GSM data transmission services already now. The need for wireless data services is growing constantly", says Mr Olavi Koistinen, Senior Vice President of Sonera Mobile Telephone Services.
