From Fodors.com, these are all in the French Quarter proper. I really like the cottages at Hotel Maison de Ville, and the Monteleone. Oh, yeah, the cottages at the Holiday Inn-Chateau LeMoyne. Cottages are a great thing for families, but upscale, don't get me wrong. The Monteleone is swanky.

Enormous rooms with sky-high ceilings, canopy or
four-poster beds, polished hardwood floors, and
rich fabrics are features of this handsome 1859
mansion in Faubourg Marigny, on the fringe of
the French Quarter. The house overlooks
Washington Square Park and has a lush rear
courtyard and pool. Guests enjoy complimentary
evening cocktails and gourmet breakfasts.

Old-world atmosphere and decor can be found just
one block off Bourbon Street. Eight suites are
in creole cottages off a tropical courtyard; all
rooms are furnished with antiques and
reproductions and have coffeemakers, hair
dryers, and irons and ironing boards. AE, D, DC,

This small, romantic hotel lies in seclusion
amid the hustle and bustle of the French
Quarter. Tapestry-covered chairs, a gas fire
burning in the sitting room, and
antiques-furnished rooms all contribute to a
19th-century atmosphere. Some rooms are in
former slave quarters in the courtyard; others
are on the upper floors of the main house.
Breakfast is served with a rose on a silver
tray, and port and sherry are served in the
afternoon. Other meals can be taken at a small
adjacent restaurant called the Bistro. Visitors
who seek a special hideaway will love the
hotel's Audubon Cottages--off the street, each
with a patio--two blocks from the hotel.

The grande dame of French Quarter hotels, with
its ornate baroque facade, liveried doormen, and
shimmering lobby chandeliers, was built in 1886
and completely renovated in 1996. It's the
quarter's oldest hotel and is operated by the
fourth generation of the Monteleone family.
Rooms are extra large and luxurious. Fabrics are
rich, and there is a mix of four-poster beds,
brass beds, and beds with traditional
headboards. Junior suites are spacious, and
sumptuous VIP suites come with extra pampering.
The pool and exercise room are on the roof; the
slowly revolving Carousel Bar in the lobby is a
landmark. AE, D, DC, MC, V. 600 rooms, 35

This elegant white-marble hotel, built in 1960
in the heart of the Vieux Carr , is a replica of
the grand St. Louis Hotel of the 1800s.
Sconce-enhanced columns, gilt mirrors, fan
windows, and three magnificent chandeliers blend
to re-create an aura that reigned in New Orleans
more than a century ago. Rooms, though not
large, are well appointed with marble baths and
marble-top dressers and tables; some have
balconies. The well-known Rib Room Restaurant
makes its home on the lobby level. The old New
Orleans map that covers one wall of the lounge
will fascinate anyone interested in history. AE,

This handsome property comprises three
meticulously restored town houses built in the
1830s. Polished hardwood floors, Oriental rugs,
and American and European antiques are
complemented by contemporary artwork. Amenities
include Crabtree & Evelyn toiletries, goose-down

and suites have hot tubs and bath phones. There
are two secluded courtyards, filled with exotic
plants, where afternoon cocktails and a
breakfast of homemade biscuits and strawberry
jam, fresh-squeezed orange juice, and caf au
