I don't think they are especially evil- they just don't happen to have many uses in modern urban/suburban society. They have a low risk/reward ratio.

In my neck of the woods, chainsaws are far more dangerous than guns. But the two most dangerous human inventions in this county are kayaks and mopeds. By far. We lose many more people in kayak accidents than in car accidents. We have many more injuries from mopeds than from any other human invention. Guns, at least in our county, don't come close.

But so far kayaks and mopeds remain legal. Anyone can use the former, and anyone with a driver's license can use the latter.
