Some excerpts from the article... International FiberCom posted revenue of $68.6 million in the first half of 1999, up 49% over one year ago. Kealy expects the full year's revenue to reach $185 million. Two analysts who follow the company estimate that International FiberCom will post net income of 15 cents a share for its third quarter, which runs through September. Kealy said he couldn't comment on that estimate but added, "I haven't asked them to change those numbers. If I had to change those numbers I would have done it." ..... International FiberCom cites an investment-bank study that estimates that industry-wide spending on such upgrades could reach $14 billion over the next 12 months. ..... To cope, International FiberCom plans to train and hire at least 1,000 and as many as 2,000 new workers in the next six months, Kealy said. Some of the new workers will come from overseas. "Within the next six months we'll have some 300 to 500 Brazilians up here working for us in telecommunications," ... Kealy hopes for even bigger things from AeroCom Inc., the wireless services unit which International FiberCom acquired in January. Although AeroCom posted only $624,000 of second-quarter revenue, it is, with a partner, one of two finalists for a $100 million contract to wire New York City tunnels to provide signals to cell phone users, he said. If AeroCom wins that contract, its share of the revenue would be $47 million, he added. ... Those big hits will be needed to help International FiberCom overcome a slump in its new and used equipment business, where sales were down 40% in the first half of 1998. The business, which accounted for 38% of the company's revenue and 74% of pre-tax profit last year, is "coming back very strongly" in the second half, Kealy said.
