At first glance, this certainly does look like end of month window dressing. I just can't figure out why anyone wants REITs to appear in their portfolios at this time. Another possibility is that some institutions buy the same amount at the end of every month, similar to monthly accumulations of a mutual fund for an individual.
The RMS index is showing weakness, but it also is only 1% below the 200 day moving average and 2% below the 50 day moving average. If it can hold above the 297 low last month, we have a good chance of starting to build a strong base. The likely catalyst is health care stocks after legislation reduces the strain of PPS. Office REITs have held up OK, but haven't fallen enough to lead the REIT market unless they go to new highs. Hospitality REITs are unlikely to gain attention except for some bottom fishing value players. As such, I imagine we are waiting on the next report of Warren Buffet accumulating some more REITs.
