The only route now for paki is to keep up with India's conventional weapons. They may add to their conventional weapons arsenal out of other compulsions but they really don't have to, as long as they retain the option of a first nuclear strike if their security is seriously threatened, a la NATO during the days of the Cold War. IOW, India can rant and rave and bark and growl all it likes, as long as it takes care not to cross the border or the LoC! <g> Well, there it is finally. It would be interesting to see what the reaction of the world community is when they learn that pakis are supplying nuclear know how to the saudis, and then to the iranians, ..... That is why the West cannot afford to let Pakistan go under. A desperate Pakistan can do exactly that -- transfer the nuclear know-how to other countries. It is also a lesson to India that while it has the ability to disrupt the global nuclear order, it does not have even the slightest clout to control its outcome and Indian security interests would be threatened by uncontrolled proliferation. Of course, it's too late for India to learn that lesson, for the nuclear genie is out of the bottle in the subcontinent now.

Shiv: Well, there it is finally. It would be interesting to see what the reaction of the world community is when they learn that pakis are supplying nuclear know how to the saudis, and then to the iranians,..... (and ultimately blame china and North korea who supplied pakiland first). Israelis and American and other western nations are watching pakistan, China and North Korea very closely. Preventing Pakistan from going nuclear was not attempted in a serious manner. Take Iraq. Its nuclear ambitions were dashed in the embryonic stage. Once Israel's security is jeopardized or a threat is perceived in a real sense by a threatened or actual nuclearization of middle east, that nuclear facility will be wiped out by a coalition forces of Israel, USA and the west. Israel is not going to wait for the consent of other countries like US or UK. Israel has the wherewithal to deal a damaging blow to the nuclear facility in Middle East. The nation or nations that supply the know-how to any Middle East country better consider the consequences from Israel.If pakistan becomes the supplier of nuclear know-how or it becomes the conduit for earning foreign exchange or brotherly love, pakistan might be on the hit list of Israel, with US and the West blocking the Chinese from getting involved. All these materials I have presented here have been extensively covered in the newspapers. India does not have to worry, but just has to sit tight & pretty and watch events unfold. US is interested in peace and wants a world without war. US is genuinely interested in denuclearization of all the countries. It has the superior technology both for conventional or nuclear war. Destruction of other nations is not in the interest of US. It has laid the foundation for a unified stable Europe by giving Milosavic a telling notice. In Middle East also, It would go into a NATO-type of operation to ensure peace and stability, if it becomes necessary. When it comes to South Asia, US will play an even hand. But India will be the winner eventually, by its sheer size, resources and enlightened foreign policy. Pakistan is under the control of about 10 to 15 families. These families do not want any real war with India. They are the ones who are going to lose eventually in case of war with India. They will do everything to prevent major wars with India. But skirmishes will continue. Pakistan will collapse and go bankrupt, if they try to keep up with India in an arms race. China will send their manuals and not the men and material needed for an arms race. Peace is the only answer for Pakistan if it wants to survive with a big neighbor at its doorstep. India has become one nation more than ever before. Nobody can undo it. JPR
