ZICA --

Maybe I forgot to tell you that I have downloaded their PDF file and tried it myself. Being a Chinese that born and raised in China, who was given intensive training in how to anlysis a chinese character in the high school years, I still could not get some commonly used characters right using their input method.

I took me more than 1 min. on average to input a character using their method (in most cases, the result of the 8 input was a wrong character!), maybe I am not well trained yet; however, unless I know that there well be a life and death situation that I HAVE to send a message using my cell phone, I will not spend the time to learn their input method.

As I said, no matter how difficulty it is to input using ZICA's method, it is the only avai. method to input chinese using 8 keys.

I can't think of any easy and fast way to input chinese using cell phone pad, we just have to wait and see if any researchers can come up with a better input method. Before that happenes, the term of the agreement is the key because I know there will not be many users.

the following statement on their webpage:
Zi 8 Input is simple to learn and easy to use -- it's intuitive. People who know how to write Chinese characters recognize the relationship between the 8 basic stroke shapes and the strokes used to write a Chinese character.
...

Since writing of Chinese characters works across dialects, the simplicity of strokes combined with the power of components overcomes the limitations of phonetic input -- it's a mass market solution for consumer devices such as mobile phones, TV set top boxes, 2 way pagers and other information appliances.

I think I am qualified as "people who know how to write chinese characters", yet I just don't "recognize the relationship between the 8 basic stroke shapes".

ps: If you don't believe me, ask one of your chinse friend to go over their demo

and see if they will rather send that message or just ask the friend to get a cell phone or just let the friend get lost :)
