I know so very well. Imagine the times when all one had was a scythe and the knowledge of how to make a haystack! And then lived in terror of a rainy day....

And think about pulling turnips in the fall and curing meat oneself with green wood chips.

In the time that Chris mentions, there were families that could not afford an ox. The women often pulled the plough, as they often still do, but this is another topic.
