The metal layers often have diagonal lines for interconnect.

Anyway, it doesn't have to be a part of the design - I've seen chips from my own company where someone put in Kermit the Frog playing a banjo in an unused area of the die (a pretty small drawing, say 10umx10um, so not easy to pick up on a large die). The layout guys just define a region which the DRC (design rule checker) ignores and they can put anything they like in there.

How long before someone puts their job on the line and puts in something rude/racist etc (it's probably already been done)
