Borb,

I have a friend who is HEAVILY involved in coordinating Y2K awareness/assistance efforts with Asian nations.

My contacts with this person have not left me confident of the efforts that have been taken. In fact, until Obuchi actually came out and mandated that Y2K should be high priority, it was like pulling teeth to get the Japanese govt to act in an independent fashion to address the issue. But now the going verbal motivator for getting them to deal with it is that "they are implementing Obuchi's policy".

This effort has only been underway for some 6 months. We should be seeing some statements coming out of the APEC summit in New Zealand. Y2K has alledgedly been placed rather high on the agenda and national leaders are supposed to be providing assessments of their economic vulnerabilities and the contingency plans they are implementing to deal with infrastructure and cross-border economic issues.

Suffice it to say that remediation is not high on their list of priorities. They are now focused on nationwide assessment and contingency planning.

Regards,

Ron
