Well, they were awarded patents to the packet switching technology that has become the standard. (The name eludes me know)

OT - RedDog, you are correct. The technology you are referring to is CDMA (Code Delay Multiple Access). It is a digital wireless technology - essentially an algorithm to scramble and un-scramble the 1s and 0s.

QCOM does get a royalty based on usage of this technology. In addition, they manufacture the handsets using this technology as well as the base station radios at the base of the cell towers. A lot of the money is made on these base station radios and this is where they really killed Ericsson and Motorola which were wedded to competing technologies (TDMA and GSM).

CDMA is a vastly superior technology and QCOM should reap the benefits until someone builds a better mousetrap.
