Dave, Wimpy or sensible? It seems to me that if one figures one is likely to be pummelled, it's better to find alternative entertainment.

Well, I've been clicking around as a customer trying to buy a Globalstar phone to use in Europe, China, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Honolulu and USA but no luck.

This is super customer unfriendly. I think Globalstar is only intending to sell these phones and minutes to corporate partners. I followed the trail from globalstar.com into 'service regions' and got a bunch of corporate junk from China Telecom, Taiwan's company and Vodafone Australia giving information on what Globalstar is, fill in this form and stuff like that, but nothing where a hot buyer can find out the real deal available in 4 weeks.

You'd think there would be a "CUSTOMERS CLICK HERE" place on the globalstar.com url, but nothing. You'd think that when you click on "CUSTOMERS CLICK HERE" you'd come to a url with multichoice "To buy a phone" "Where do you want service?" on a map of the world and you just click on the spot you want coverage or zoom onto a bigger map if it's close to a national border and there might be a question as to who would be the service provider.

You'd think there would be click through links from the map of the world to the service provider you click on with all their details and offers and how to buy the phone and all the guff. Nope!

You'd think there would be pictures of phones, their prices, service plans, minute prices, how to work the phones, what to expect and all sorts. Nope. Nothing.

Nothing on the Geneva launch, whether handsets will be available there, how much they will cost, what service plans will be available. No site map so I can find the launch site at the Geneva show. Nothing on the Geneva show.

Maybe they don't know The Web is the main communication channel for 100s of millions of people now and especially people who might buy a Globalstar phone [that's my theory anyway and it applies to me].

The whole Web experience in relation to Globalstar is from the corporate point of view instead of the customer's point of view. It's like wading through a thick, deep, jungle of corporate bog trying to find the jewel, which is theoretically in there somewhere.

I'll go wade some more.

I think there are thousands of potential customers clicking around the Web, wondering whether Globalstar or Iridium or maybe ICO is the best bet and unable to find much of anything. They sure can't order a phone and pay for it yet. Not that I can see.

Why doesn't Qualcomm set up a Website and sell the phones direct, ready to log on to the network? I don't want to go to a shop somewhere. I want to inspect the specs and phone on the Web, click here, send some Q or even boring old credit card details, and get it delivered. Now would be fine. Then I could phone Globalstar in Geneva and ask them where the hell there tent is!

Hey, [or Hay in American], I should go to Airtouch url. I heard they are the red hot marketers. I bet they can do it all for me! Here I go. I'll report back. They should be able to sell me a phone, then in those countries I visit, I could just log on to the local network and start using it.
