I don't have an exact answer with regard to payments, if any, to the search engines included in MetaCrawler. My best guess is a contract needs to be signed giving Go2Net permission to include a search engine in MetaCrawler but that there isn't necessarily a fee for either party associated with the contract.

Go2Net has in the past paid Excite a royalty fee for part of the MetaCrawler technology.

I remember doing a query and thought I saw something next to some of the items returned that indicated those items were paid for.

You probably saw one of the results from GoTo.com. They put ads into their index and identify them as paid listings.

For example, GNET pays GoTo for a listing for Hypermart and probably other sites as well. Search for "business hosting" and you'll probably see the GoTo result near the top.
