I think you are buying into anti-gun myths. Ypu put a lot of work into that post. But I have to wonder who is in possession of the true facts and who the myth. Now handguns were not really invented in the form they are in today until not too long before the civil war. So the wide spread ownership of handguns was after the civil war. But pre-civil war every family needed a long rifle. it was an expensive purchase. Many may have had to go without. But as many as could did buy them. They were a tool of survival. It is more economics than any other reason that there may have been less gun ownership. There were also less people too. But the 2nd amendment did give us the right to own them. it's like equal rights for all. There was no such thing pre-civil war. Does that mean it's a bad thing today? That's the line of your argument about guns.
