Rude,
I understand what you're saying about qualifying the reviewed comps... yes, indeed. But the net effect is that this kind of scuttlebut is allowed to flourish in the mag without the right context for understanding which deal is best. With the clout that CPQ might muster I'm surprised that they didn't interact more and get either the "right", comparable machine reviewed, or interact with them in such a fashion that they get a fair review. If PCMag is busy pushing the offerings of their heaviest advertizers, then I am stumbling around in a political/economic swamp and "never mind". If they are doing a "fair" review, then they are less comprehensive and competent than I imagined--- I knew the 2200 series was older.

Thanks for the in depth comparative review of your own... interesting how one could buy the fastest HP machine from Walmart!

I keep hearing you report that CPQ is outselling the next four makes substantially, yet when I see advertising in BEst Buy, COMPUSA, and CIrcuit City, all of the brands are featured more prominently than CPQs, and often the featured line is a house brand. By what avenue(s) do you think that CPQ is able to dominate the retail consumer sector? Radio Shack? Direct to consumer? Other?

Doug

I'm with you rude. Compaqworks has some very inexpensive refurbished machines. Okay, so most people think they are obsolete since they are 3 months old. But, come on, is a 600 MHz Pentium III that much better than a 450 MHz Pentium II? Is it worth 2X the price?

As far as Compaq stock is concerned, I hope people buy the latest 600 MHz stuff because of the larger profit margin. But in reality, Compaq needs to be making more cuts. They are not moving fast enough. 100 people working on NT and 1600 manufacturing people in Singapore sometime in Q1. This is going to take awhile to get to 8000 people that CPQ said would be cut. Expect another loss this quarter if things don't change.
