Don't you two think a very good FREE office suite will be very tempting for mid to smaller size corporations, mid to low end computer makers and portals(with StarPortal)???

Why mid to low end? It seems to me that a mildly good FREE office suite with SOURCE code is highly desirable to larger corporations in particular (especially on a desktop suite with the same UI as a distributed suite used elsewhere in the organization).

Microsoft's real problem is, that with the fast networks of the future, a specialized OS won't be needed so much...Don't you two think a very good FREE office suite will be very tempting for mid to smaller size corporations, mid to low end computer makers and portals(with StarPortal)???

Windows + MS Office still provides the best desktop metaphor and most people will be unlikely to put up with an albeit cheaper but less functional desktop + office suite; Linux + Star.

Windows + Star though has a shot ... although as a consumer or corporation do I want to rely on Sun as my MS Windows office software provider ? What vested interest does Sun have in supporting my office product on Windows - since they are giving it away for free ?

Will Sun's Star Office development keep pace with the army of developers maintaining/enhancing Office 2000 --- I don't think so.

Therefore the free offer may be enticing in the short term but I think people know long term where they can get quality desktop office products from - Msft.

Cheers
