keeping babies in cribs, rather than sleeping with their mothers
...but what about the FATHER? Can he sleep there too? :-)
I agree the American society is the "pop 'em out, throw 'em into day care, and git back to work ASAP" capital of the world.

Wow that was an interesting post. People on this thread are probably laughing their butts off thinking about a 6 year old breast feeding. I'd like to add that it's not really that ridiculous a sight although even in primitive cultures they've cut down on the average age of a breast fed child.

Another thing to note is that children in these "primitive" societies are usually much smaller than children in American society . . . that 6 year old is probably more the size of a 2 year old American child. For example in India a fat baby would weight 5 to 6 pounds. Try finding a baby that small in the US. American babies are much fatter and perhaps that also contributes to having lots of fat adults around here. Must be something in that food and even the breast milk of American mothers that makes those babies so fat. It's a problem that really seems to stay with you though . . . an issue to be studied further but I think it's pretty much impossible to come up with solutions to this problem.

reputable psychologists who argue that the high rate of neurosis in American society comes from lack of breast feeding, and keeping babies in cribs, rather than sleeping with their mothers

I couldn't agree more but there are too many issues to overcome before anyone can even start to think about solving the problem of neurosis in American society. For example, people should learn to stop thinking that a woman seen breast feeding her child in public is a bad thing and should be illegal. But a strip club where a woman is showing a whole lot more than a breast, well that's perfectly ok and normal. Talk about screwed up ideas!

However breast feeding a child till they are 6 years old also creates alot of psychological problems. The child becomes paralyzed when he is separated from his mother for any period of time and it becomes almost impossible to get them to stop breast feeding without them putting up a fight. I know because I have a cousin who was breast feed till she was 5. It was hell to get her weaned. You wouldn't believe the stuff we had to do to get her to stop screaming all the time. We actually invented a boogie man and put a huge scarecrow on our property and every time she'd want to be breast fed we'd say oh no you can't do that because the scarecrow will do something bad to you when you're sleeping. Perhaps that was not a very good idea because although she doesn't have the same problems as adults who weren't breast fed long enough, she has some pretty bad and original behaviour problems of her own.

Now that she's an adult, we've given up trying to make her normal. She's finished . . . the extended breast feeding has scarred her for life! I love her because she's my cousin, but she's nuts! All because of too much breast feeding! How could we have known? LOL!

And in fact, there are reputable psychologists who argue that the high rate of neurosis in American society comes from lack of breast feeding, and keeping babies in cribs, rather than sleeping with their mothers

In the country where I live letting a baby or toddler sleep alone would be unthinkable, on a level with child abuse.

I would suggest that a mother feeling the need to breastfeed a six year old, is probably nurturing their own neurosis, instead of attempting to alleviate one from the child.
