Uranerz Exploration and Mining Limited owned the Argyle tenements in Australia not DeBeer's. Uranerz was looking for uranium and heard rumors that diamonds were found in a placer just off the lamproite. A consultant hired by the company said some stones were found that were poor in quality. Uranerz saw no further need to keep the ground and released it. Ashton Joint Ventures picked it up and the rest is history. DeBeer's Aussie operative is called Stockdale Corporation. aj
