Tellabs Names Don Jones Vice President of North American Sales
LISLE, Ill., Sept. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Tellabs (Nasdaq: TLAB - news) announced today that it has named Don Jones its new vice president of North American Sales. In this position, he will be responsible for sales of Tellabs products in North America, and will report to John E. Vaughan, president of Global Sales and Service.

Jones succeeds Chris Cooney, one of Tellabs' six original founders, who will help transition the leadership of the North American sales organization to Jones, and will continue to serve Tellabs in other capacities.

``This company owes much of its current success to Chris,' said Tellabs President and CEO Michael J. Birck. ``We will miss him in this important role, but fortunately he won't be far away. Chris will play a key role in the transition of his team to Don so that he may build upon the many successes Chris achieved in his nearly 25 years with Tellabs. As the organization continues to grow, we believe Don will be a strong addition to assist Tellabs in becoming a global service provider and helping carriers build the new public network.'

Jones held numerous sales and marketing positions in his more than 20 years at IBM, including director of public sector industry marketing, where he developed and implemented marketing programs and strategies for one of IBM's largest industry segments. Jones also served as IBM's regional manager and director of area support for the Midwestern area. Jones also spent five years at American Express where he served as vice president of client management and regional vice president and general manager of the company's Washington, D.C. regional office. Most recently, Jones was vice president and general manager, home improvement service for Sears Roebuck and Co. where he delivered substantial increased profits and earned the Sears Chairman Team Award for the first half of 1999.

Jones has a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Purdue University, where he also serves on the university's executive board for the National Society of Black Engineers. He also is a member of the board of directors of the Big Brothers organization.

Jones and his wife, Ricarda, have a 14-year-old son, Zan. They reside in Naperville.
