India backs Kyrghyzstan Kyrghys Republiclib.utexas.edu About Kyrghyzstan The Kyrgyz Republic's population and customs emerged from centuries of Mongol and Muslim domination of the land (it was part of Turkestan, the area conquered by Genghis Khan that stretched from Mongolia to Turkey). The effect is obvious today?in some places you'll find a robed populace that still uses camels as beasts of burden, lives in houses similar to those found in the Middle East and worships in ancient mosques. But even after the fall of the Soviet Union, there is still a significant Russian presence (the Kyrgyz Republic remains a member of the Commonwealth of Independent States).... excite.com By Our Special Correspondent (Source:The Hindu) NEW DELHI, SEPT. 1. Concerned about the spread of international terrorism from Afghanistan, India today said that it fully stood by the Central Asian Republic of Kyrghyzstan which had been subjected to cross-border terrorist attacks. In a letter to the Kyrghyz Foreign Minister, Mr. Muratbek Imanaliev, the External Affairs Minister, Mr. Jaswant Singh, said that India expressed its full solidarity with the Government and people of Kyrghyzstan in their hour of ``grave concern'. According to reports, hundreds of Islamic militants from the Afghan-Tajik axis had entrenched themselves in southern Kyrghyzstan and had taken several Japanese technocrats hostage. These developments had led Kyrghyzstan's Central Asian neighbours - Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Tajikistan - to agree on Saturday on providing military aid to counter the insurgents. Kyrghyzstan has asked Russia for weapons while the Uzbek Air Force has reportedly launched strikes on militant strongholds. The fighting has already triggered migrations of around 4,000 people from the battle zone. The External Affairs Minister, in his letter, strongly condemned these acts aimed at destabilising States and their established governments. The origin of the these extremist elements and terrorists and the camps in which they are trained are well- known. ``Cross-border terrorism is a phenomena which should be combated most decisively by all civilised societies and governments,' the message adds. India, which itself has been subjected to terrorism over the years, fully supports the Kyrghyz Republic in preserving its ``democratic and secular order', the Minister observed.
