<What if it's become true!!!>

If it becomes true I will think about selling Lucent and buying more Cisco. Lucent does not need 3Coms second-rate technology and low-end products. I know, I know! What about the Palm Pilot? Big deal! Lucent could probably augment the Palm Pilot with its own wireless offerings.

I hope this rumor is not true because 3Com has been getting its butt kicked for years by Cisco and what Lucent needs are products that compete head to head with Cisco and wins. Products like the ones that Ascend offers. Come to think about it what about the product overlap in the remote access area between Ascend and 3Com? That is another reason that this merger doesn't make sense.

Hoping for something better for Lucent. (Like Cabletron!)

Cheers,

Steve

The bottom line is, can LU afford to buy 3COM ? with market cap of nearly $10B, LU would have to pay $20B for that ? Unless 3COM trim it product lines and make it fit. Otherwise, I would see big layoffs after LU's take over if the rumors are true..
