Well, my history classes didn't get into who financed the Roman Senators' re-election campaigns (other than they seemed to be allowed - or allowed themselves - to dip into the City/State treasury in order to buy votes via their version of "entitlements").

And I think my comment also points up the danger of any country getting over-extended militarily...such as we're now seemingly poised to be, as the Policeman of the World...or at least we are when Clinton needs a diversion from his domestic entanglements.<ng>

As to campaign finance reform...I definitely agree it's needed, but our good Congressional rep's don't seem to want to put limits on their cholesterol intake by doing away with their Golden Eggs...who can blame them??? So many geese, so many eggs....so much apathy.
