I tend to agree with you. Perhaps Sun should create a Consumer Products business unit to respond to their increasing role as a consumer-product company, rather than the engineering-product company that they have been in the past.

Otherwise, maybe what Sun should do is outsource this kind of product shipping to someone who can handle the volume: perhaps Amazon.com :)

I had a different experience. My username existed and I just typed in the correct password. Perhaps though, Sun should use the same type of 'forgot password' thing that other sites use (if they don't already).

The $10 is a 'cost of media' charge. If it's like Solaris 7, there are 3 or 4 CDs in a package. $10 is a reasonable charge. The arranged electrons are free. That you have a slower connection to the internet is not a fault of Sun.

If you can't wait the 5 days (which is what the site actually says), you might start a download before you go to bed. When you wake up (as I did thismorning), it's there.

I did that. I clicked through the wizard driven installation. It's wonderful. It's happening, and it's available to YOU in the exact same way. That you want or need Ed Zander to personally drive it over to your house for you, I don't quite follow.

Giving away Star - business wise does it make sense ? I mean MS Office generates ~ $5B/annum for MSFT ... nothing to sneeze at. If Star were to capture 1/2 the seats at 1/2 the revenue that still would be 1-2B in revenue.

Is this Sun's gift to the alternative desktop and/or an initial investment in the base for a thin client office ?

Cheers
James
