Poor Tesh would have gladly removed his eyeball and sent it along to the vet without him, had he been given a choice. Luckily Dr. Ruffner is only a mile away. We used to have a cat Agnus, who loved to take long rides with us. He would get in the front window, stretch out like a furry black boa, and watch the scenery go by. If we were in the mountains, he would get out and walk along the trails with us. We'd share our cheese and crackers with him and he'd sleep all the way home.
However, Tesh just got under the seat and howled all the way to the Animal Hospital. When we got there, I lugged him in, writhing and moaning, and plopped him on the counter. Next to me was this elegant woman with a little carrying case and a beautiful Persian peeking out. They were both wearing jeweled necklaces. They looked with disdain at us, me sniffling in my Earth mother, hairy sundress, and poor ugly, one-eyed Tesh with his red plastic flea collar that clashes with his butterscotch coat. I tried to rub the car grease off his head.

"What a beautiful cat!" I said.

"Thank you, and yours..." she looked at Tesh, obviously trying to find something nice to say,"...has such pointy ears."
