I agree that Media Metrix is doing a good PR job by releasing those bits of free data to the public, and in the process making themselves the "authority" on web ratings. Like Nielson TV ratings or radio Arbitrons, the numbers thus become important even if the methods of gathering them are less than optimal.

But about the numbers themselves: What I find interesting is the position of GNET's once and future neighbor RNWK in the weekly ratings. They had a 13 rank in the July monthly stats and came in at #8 on the weekly ratings.

If that holds up for the August monthly rankings, it will be a sign that broadband is starting to have a significant effect on 'net usage. Others are also in the game, but Real's is the 'net property that seems to benefit most from broadband. That would be confirmed if their search partner, Snap (which has a broadband portal), also rises in the monthly rankings.

Things like the On24 RealVideo link that Susan just posted can be experienced with a modem but it's comparable to surfing the web with a 14.4 modem. With broadband, the kind of content served by RNWK's technology and promoted on their web sites becomes a useful and standard part of the 'net experience.

Many on this thread have talked about how GNET is overlooked
by the big financial houses. Check out this article:
