Is Sneaker the one who likes to ride on the machines when you are working? Or is that McKinley?

"Charlie Manson" cut down his apple tree. I don't know where to begin to tell this story. Remember the time I snuck out in the middle of the night, 4:00 a.m., really, one time when I woke up with insomnia, and tore the bumper sticker of his car? The one that said "How's My Driving? Call 1(800)EAT-SHIT). And I never really explained, but this is a middle class neighborhood, the guy next door works for the CIA, and the guy across the street handles security for the Commerce Department, he's the one that makes sure that no one leaks economic indicators early to stockbrokers, and the people next door used to be computer programmers, but they moved, and so on and on. It's not a ritzy neighborhood but it's peaceful and clean. So when these people bought a house at foreclosure, the "eat shit" bumper sticker just didn't do. Everybody had to see it when they came in the neighborhood, and some of the houses down the street are pretty fancy. And I know you think I am materialistic, and intolerant, but that bumper sticker had to go. So it did.

Other than that, the family is kinda ok, Steve, who is Ben's age, wears t-shirts with obscenities on them, and he and his sister have that hang-dog and defiant look of kids who probably get hit too much or too hard, but they're clean, otherwise, no bruises. Ben quit playing with Steve when he brought a couple of his friends over and when they left his Gameboy was missing.

A lot of the neighbors call the dad "Charlie Manson" because of his long shaggy hair and his long shaggy beard, and there's always people there, spilling out of the house, every hour of the day and night.

You probably feel some sympathy for him, but I doubt you will after I tell you that he built a deck and the supports are 2x4s and they don't have footings, they just rest on a concrete patio. And sometimes he's got 25 people up there.

This year the apple tree in his front yard, I was going to say his apple tree, but I don't see it like that, a mature apple tree that has always produced hundreds of small, but tasty apples, had a bumper crop. Every branch was so laden that they were drooping. And when I would walk past his house, all the apples were lying on the ground, rotting. I didn't want to pick one from the tree, the people who lived there before would let me pick one when I went by, but I didn't want to ask him. And the ones on the ground were just everywhere, hundreds, all bruised and rotting. It was just a shame to waste apples like that.

What kind of a person would just let the apples lie on the ground and rot?

Yesterday he cut the tree down, apples and all, and someone hauled it away.

I'm glad I'm moving.
