Ali,

<Do you mean that he left his position at SGI
as Principal Scientist at System Architecture
and Performance? The promotion he got just a year ago?
And now with IBM? Fast career advances indeed...>

Think about it.. he was at SGI. SGI sinking fast. Care
to go long on SGI? Good luck. SGI .. what a wonderful
study. Banked heavily on Merced being meaningful and on
time. Made a last gasp course reversal with an extended
MIPS roadmap in March of this year.. nearly a full year
(May of 1998) after HP made their Merced reversal and
trotted out their extended PA-RISC roadmap. You can't
help but feel a bit sorry for SGI as wonderful engineering
is being pummelled by poor management.. top that off
with MIPS looking rather embarassing performance-wise:

Box: Origin2100
Spec Submission Date: August 20, 1999
CPU: R10000 @ 250 MHz
SpecInt95: 15.3
SpecFp95: 25.2

Box: XP1000
Spec Submission Date: August 18, 1999
CPU: 21264A @ 667 MHz
SpecInt95: 37.5
SpecFp95: 65.5

I suppose he may regret it now that he fully realizes
Merced is a screamer and the numbers flying around IDF
had EVERYONE amazed they were so good!!!

Not.

Very wise decision on his part I would say. . .
