I think this approach is called being vertically integrated, and there are several models in several different business that do this. The oil companies come immediately to mind. All be it that no one of them holds a monopolisitc position. I read an article today that said Intel was going to produce chips that put address the hub and router business and work directly with the likes of Cisco, so why not take on more of what makes there stuff even more dominant?
