Korea's Kospi index rose 17.63 to 916.60
Chipmakers led gains as the price of its main product
continues to climb. The spot market price of the industry
standard 64-megabit dynamic random access memory chip rose 18.7
percent this week to $8.89, close to twice the break-even price
for the product.

The price has more that doubled since it slumped to a record
low in early July. Samsung Electronics Co. the world's largest
memory chipmaker rose 7.1 percent to 241,0000. Samsung gets over
a third of its sales from its semiconductor division. Hyundai
Electronics Industries Co. rose 5.5 percent, to 37,450. Hyundai
Microelectronics Co. rose 6.1 percent, to 26,200 won.

Taiwan's benchmark TWSE Index fell 0.8 percent to 8160.78
led by electronics companies. Major stocks favored by foreign
investors, such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., fell
on concern a four-week, 21 percent rally in the benchmark index
has pushed stocks higher than is justified by the outlook for
corporate profits.
