Exactly. John Carter. Deja Thoris. Banths. Barsoom. Red grass and vegetation. Flying ships. Felicitous place, I was transported. And Pelucidar, the Earth's core. And Venus. Oh, how wonderful. My allowance, each week, was fifty cents. Exactly enough for one Edgar Rice Burroughs books, and one ice cream sandwich, every Saturday. Sometimes I would collect bottles, and return them for the deposits (remember those?) and I could buy a comic book. But I much preferred reading the comic books without buying them. I remember the time I was in the drugstore, reading the comic books, when someone knocked over my bicycle, off its kickstand. I ran out of the drugstore, crying, "God dammit@!" When I went back in, the druggist remonstrated with me, "Ladies don't use such language!" I informed him, "I am not a lady!" To which he responded, "Well, you don't need to let everyone know it." Truer words were never spoken. I've never forgotten that.
